Sweatshirts & Hoodies: Now 100% Organic Cotton & Made in Portugal

Previously, the sweatshirts were made from organic cotton with about 15% recycled polyester, and produced in Bangladesh under certified working conditions. The recycled polyester helped the garments maintain their shape over time, but I’ve come to really appreciate the way the new sweatshirts age and soften with wear (like vintage sweatshirts).

Regarding production in Bangladesh: I never had a moral issue sourcing there. The factories were certified, and I don’t believe people trying to make a living should be penalized because some factory owners behave like parasites. I was happy to put my money behind the factories setting an example. My decision at the time was also practical - it simply wasn’t possible to source 100% organic cotton sweatshirts made in Portugal in quantities accessible to a very small brand like Tinctorium.

As a tiny studio, I cannot meet the minimum order quantities required by manufacturers, so I source my sweatshirts through “blank” suppliers (I order 6-9 sweatshirts at a time, MOQs require 500 units). Until recently, none of those suppliers offered anything made in Portugal. Now that they do, the previous models no longer make sense for the values of the studio.

This change does mean that sweatshirt prices have increased by €20–€30, reflecting only the higher cost of purchasing these blanks. I’ve noticed a significant drop in sweatshirt sales since the change, but it’s a decision I’m committed to, even if it simply means producing fewer pieces.

Why Sweatshirts?

Sweatshirts remain part of the collection because they are one of the few truly unisex garments I can source in a complete size run (S–L). Unlike vintage pieces (which require hours of searching and hand-selecting individual garments) sweatshirts allow me to work with a consistent pattern that I can make available in a full size run. It gives a little bit of stability to what offerings I can provide.
