Experience Ecoprinting October 2026

Ecoprinting (also known as botanical printing) is a contemporary technique, which adapts the fundamentals of natural dyeing to extract the pigment directly from the plant straight to the fabric - in this way, we're able to capture the shape and subtle nuances of the colors hidden within the leaves. The goal isn't necessarily to create a rainbow of colors, but to use the plant material to directly give patterns, shapes, and textures. 

In this short 3-hour workshop you'll dip your toes into this technique and do your first ecoprint on a piece to take home (choose between a tote bag, apron, t-shirt, or pillow case set - All in organic cotton). A perfect introductory experience to interact with the technique and see if you want to learn more in the full-day Fundamentals workshop.

You will learn:

• How the chosen mordant (pre-treatment) will affect the resulting color

  (Please note, I will not teach how to apply all of these mordants in this workshop. Please see Fundamentals workshops to learn these processes.)

• The bundling process of printing plants on fabric

• One easy way to mordant your fabric without having to purchase anything - the Iron method

• Seasonal plants that can be used for ecoprinting.

Program:

• Introduction and choosing your base mordant (already prepared in advance).

• An introduction to the plants we'll be working with.

• Ecoprinting your chosen piece.

• Opening the bundles and comparing results.

At the end of the workshop, you will leave with an eco printed organic cotton tote bag, tshirt, or set of organic cotton pillowcases and a basic understanding of the art of botanical printing. A perfect experience to connect with the landscape in a creative way, learn more about your local plants, and make something beautiful.

If you wish to dye your own piece during the workshop (no larger than a shirt, please), you must get it to me 7+ days ahead of the workshop date by meeting me at a market, dropping it off in person to the studio, or sending my uber/mail. Please send a message to coordinate.

FAQ:

How do I get there?  Como chego lá?

The workshop will be held at Tinctorium Studio in Abóboda, São Domingos de Rana (close to Carcavelos). By car, it's about 20-30 minutes fom Lisbon and 20 minutes from Cascais. By public transport you can take the train from Lisbon to Oeiras or Carcavelos (Cais do Sodré-Cascais line) and several busses that get you very close (4 min walk) from these train stations.

What language will the workshop be taught in? Em que idioma o será workshop ?

The workshop will be taught in the common language or both languages (clarifications in either language is possible) and the digital booklet is available in both languages.

Do I need to bring anything? Preciso trazer alguma coisa?

(RECOMMENDED) Bring a pen and paper, appropriate clothing that can get dirty, and a hat/sunscreen/sweater/rainjacket depending on the weather since we will be outside. All other materials are included in the enrollment price.

What if it rains? E se chover?

Tinctorium Studio has a physical studio where the workshop can take place regardless of rain. Should the weather prevision call for rain, please bring a rainjacket so we can still go out to get some plants.

How many people will there be in the workshop? Quantas pessoas estarão na oficina?

The workshop will run with a minimum of 4 participants and a maximum of 6 so everyone can work comfortably and I can give attention to all.

What if I have to cancel? E se eu tiver que cancelar?

Ticket purchases are fully refundable up to 7 days before the start of the workshop, cancellations in the week leading up to the workshop will not be reimbursed but can be credited to a future workshop with a rescheduling fee of €20. Cancellations within 24-hours before the start of the workshop are not eligible for refund or credit.  

There is an enormous amount of preparation, planning, and material purchasing that goes into each workshop so, unfortunately, I'm unable to fulfill refunds in the days leading up. If you can't make it last minute, I recommend finding someone who would love to spend the day creating color from plants to take your place or you can apply the credit to a different date.
