Shift and deepen natural dye colors

Iron is used as a modifier in natural dye processes to alter and deepen colors. It can transform bright tones into more muted, earthy shades and create contrast in eco printing.

Often used after dyeing or printing, it allows you to expand your color palette and add depth to your results.

Used in our studio

We use iron regularly in our studio to create variation, contrast, and more complex tones in botanically dyed textiles.

How to use

Dissolve a small amount of iron in water to create a modifier bath.

Apply after dyeing or eco printing by dipping the textile briefly or by using it selectively to create contrast. Results will vary depending on the fiber, dye, and concentration used.

Always test on a sample before applying to your final piece.

Important

Handle with care and use protective gloves when working with iron.

Iron can weaken fibers, especially protein fibers such as wool and silk, if used in high concentration or for prolonged exposure.

Avoid overuse and rinse thoroughly after application.
